I have spent the year in silence
Seemingly, rehearsing for a world where
my voice no longer exists
I have spent most of my evenings
lying stiff on my back
dark curtains closed
in my best coffin position
I have told myself far worse things
than the doctor has
proclaiming “realism” over good ol’ fashion
as if I was never able to move mountains
as if I never learned how to take flight.

When a Black boy is killed
the conversations that hover over his
lifeless body
often become about everything
his right to remain breathing

He is buried twice
Once, beneath the soil
Once, beneath everyone’s other agendas.

We, generation hashtag.
We, generation: Microwave Outrage.
We, generation online rubberneck at the wreckage.
We, generation lucky that they did all the heavy lifting.
We, ain’t about that life.
We, about living the spoils of “equality”.
We, speak on it when a life is loss
when the inequity of our lives is headlined.
We, blow out the torch until we get burned again.
We, generation easily distracted
We, don’t move no mo’
All we do is this.
All we do is this.

This Tuesday at Le Bon Temps Bar & Grill, the 2014 Baton Rouge National Poetry Slam Team will be the main feature. The team will showcase their poems before traveling to Oakland, California to compete at NPS. I advised anyone if you’re a poetry fan and you’re in the surrounding area of Baton Rouge definitely come out for this one.
